Friday Fav: Fortuny

My Friday Fav today is Mariano Fortuny and his magnificent and sumptuous silk dresses, cloaks and medieval style robes.
I really love this artist because his fame and art are closely linked with Venice despite his name reveals its Spanish origin: he was born in Granada on 11 May 1871 and he spent his childhood between Rome, a little town near Naples and Paris. Fortuny was just eighteen when his family moved to Venice, in a palace in the Canareggio and soon he started to love the new place, its architecture, the oriental atmosphere of the city and the work of Venetian Renaissance painters such as Bellini, Titian, Veronese and Giorgione: all these elements influenced his dress design and his friends said that he spoke Venetian better than Italian.
At the age of forty he threw totally himself into fashion design, after devoting his life to photography, painting and sculpture. His name is connected with the thin pleated silk dress but we must not forget that the Fortuny style was the result of a collaboration between him and the French modell Henriette Negrin. They spent forty-seven happy years together in Venice and in 1909 they opened the first Fortuny boutique in Palazzo Orfei, later renamed Palazzo Fortuny. They worked in this way: he invented the pleated look and the dyeing process while Henriette picked out the patterns and block-printed the patterns of the dresses.
It is important to remark that Fortuny was not a couturier because he did not present an annual collection but he was interested in reaching a big and romantic purpose: a timeless ideal form of beauty.
The "Delphos" dress, the most famous icon of his style, was cut out flat in one piece, than the imported Japanese folded silk laid on heated porcelain tubes fixing permanently the tight pleats with the help of Chinese crystallized egg white. The result was a pressed dress that recalled the idealized "flower-woman" and the "Delphi Charioteer", from ancient Greece. Every single dress had the shoulders and seams accentuated with Murano glass beads, made specially for Fortuny. The success of Fortuny's creations lasted from 1910 until the Forties.

It is today already possible to breathe and feel its power and creativity visiting Palazzo Fortuny in Venice. I went there a couple of years ago and I can assure that the "primo piano nobile" (first reception hall) had a powerful impact on me. I found his fabrics, collections, paintings and dresses simply amazing.

Love a Bear ʕ •ᴥ•ʔ

Oh yeah! I made a messenger bag shaped as a bear's muzzle. It's so cute!
At the beginning I was a little bit dubious about the shape of the bag, for this reason I drew some sketches on my moleskine but in the end I come up with the right solution.
I applied the eye-button and the cutie ears, the nose is a snap button (to make safer the closure) and I've embroidered the mouth on it.
The polka dot beige cotton is divided from the brown one with the kawaii ribbon I love Bear from Seamstar.

The messenger bags are waiting for a cute owner on my estore http://fedulab.bigcartel.com/

A soft spot for Marimekko fabrics

I have a soft spot for Marimekko fabrics because they remind me the tea towels of my childhood. When I was a child I used to drink tea in a lovely old mug with a scandinavian drawing on it.
Now I have the great possibility to make new handbags with these gorgeous finnish cottons.
Eevi (with a zipper closure) it's made with Rasymatto fabric from Marimekko collection, Maija is an handbag made using 100% cotton Finnish Marimekko fabric in their signature Unikko Red and Pink design. While Florinia (with a zipper closure) is made with a combination of fabrics from Marimekko, Horrockses and Robert Kaufman.
Stay tuned here or on my online store...new handbags coming soon!

London Fabrics

2012 will be a year of celebration with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
To celebrate these unique events have been drawn a lot of fabrics that recall the symbols of the monarchy, the architecture of London and the colours red, blue and white. Here's the selection I made for you [Check them out on http://www.seamstar.co.uk]

Blythe retro party dresses

[Scroll down for English version]

Rieccomi!

Fedulab is back!
During this week I will post all the creations I made a couple of weeks ago. Today I want to show you one of my recent experiment: two retro party dresses for Blythe.
Do you know who is the Blythe Doll? In short it is a doll created in the 70s and recentely has been in vogue. Its particularity is the infinite variations which you can obtain just changing its hairstyle, length, color of hair and eyes.
I was inspired by the typical '50s cocktail dresses, characterized by a high waist and wide skirt.
The first model is made with a red and white checkered fabric and I applied on the waist some flowers.
For the second one I chose a piece of Sakura fabric, with which I also made the bag Sakura
The official model of my experiment in micro-tailoring is Ortensia, the Patty's doll and she has taken these handsome pictures for my blog.

Coming soon on Seamstar: Flea Market Fancy and Summersville

My Horrockses fabrics from V&A

I've just bought two fabrics from V&A museum with design adapted from a 1950s fabric designed for Horrockses Fashions. They are called 'Pink Daisy' and 'Daisy Stripe' (Navy), i love them! Horrockses Fashions Limited was the manufacturer of one of the most well-respected ready-to-wear labels of the 1940s and 1950s. The company are best known for their full-skirted dresses which were sought after by women everywhere and were even worn by Queen Elizabeth II.

The prince of prints: Emilio Pucci

"True elegance is freedom of expression"
Emilio Pucci

Published by Taschen, Emilio Pucci The Prince of Prince, offers readers the possibility to immerse themselves into the aristocratic style of the Florentine fashion house Pucci.
Featuring hundreds of photographs, drawings, and candid shots from the archive of the Emilio Pucci Foundation, Vanessa Friedman built the path that has made the Pucci's brand famous all over the world.
The pages include pictures of the famous kaleidoscopic prints and lightweight jersey fabrics that have become Pucci's leitmotiv.
A journey from the Emilio Pucci's fifties to the present where the designer's daughter Laudomia carries on the family legacy with the help of British designer Matthew Williamson.
Each unique XL copy is bound with one of a selection of recent print fabrics from the Pucci collection.
